Some information on Djanet, the starting point of our circuits.

Djanet is the administrative centre of Daira, the head office of Wilaya is at Illizi.

In a nomad region, it is somewhat difficult to know the exact population number, but the general consensus is that there are 9000 habitants at Djanet.

Djanet has an international airport, a hotel, banks (closed on Fridays and Saturdays), a hospital and a museum in the National Park building.

Djanet is the conglomerate of several villages which follow the valley of the wadi for around 20km. The modern town centre is Tin-Khatma. The most interesting villages are the old ksours.

  • Adjahil, on the right bank (the wadi “flows” north-south), glued against the cliff, with it’s very ancient fortifications on the summit of the mountain.
  • El-Mihane, the typical Saharianksar(old village), perched at height with it’s narrow and winding streets.
  • Azellouaz, with its houses now somewhat in ruins, built between blocks of granite. A beautiful ancient mosque with a sober minaret dominates the village.

More to see at Djanet: the palm grove and its gardens, the blacksmith-jewellers, the exhibition at the Park.

Lankechem, the Polar star! Follow it well and you will have nothing to fear!
